Present Subjunctive

We form the present subjunctive, by modifying the ending of the first person singular (eu) of the present indicative, as follows:

  • -ar verbs: Falar (to speak) ➡ Eu falo ➡ fale, fales, fale, falemos, falem
  • -er verbs: Ter (to have) ➡ Eu tenho ➡ tenha, tenhas, tenha, tenhamos, tenham
  • -ir verbs: Abrir (to open) ➡ Eu abro ➡ abra, abras, abra, abramos, abram

Sometimes a spelling adjustment is needed, to keep the original consonant sound of the verb. For example: Ficar (to stay) ➡ fique, fiques, fique, fiquem, fiquemos
