Cabeceiras de Basto
The town big autumn fair, mixing concerts with the older things around them: a corn-husking desfolhada, horse races, food stalls, and the religious festivities the fair grew out of.

Viana do Alentejo
One of the older Alentejo fairs, built around the Nossa Senhora d’Aires sanctuary on the edge of town. Devotion, a traditional market, crafts and live music, with the council promising a single joined-up programme this year.

Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo
The third Feira Agricola Transfronteirica puts Portuguese and Spanish border farmers in the same field for three days, with livestock and machinery, tastings of the region food, and music in the evenings.

Alijó
A one-day fair for the town holiday: roasted chestnuts, the year new wine, tripe, and a gastronomic showcase put on by the parishes of the council.
10 to 15 September
Vila Viçosa, Évora
Six days of the town festa at the Largo dos Capuchos, with a nightly music programme that includes Emanuel and Vítor Kley, food and drink stalls and religious ceremonies. The local press also lists bull-running in the programme.

Celorico da Beira, Guarda
The annual saint day festa and fair, with concerts, an equestrian show and pony rides on the 12th and 13th, a local produce fair on the same two days, street entertainment, and a livestock show from half past seven on the closing morning.

Coura, Seixas, Caminha
Two days of village festas honouring Nossa Senhora da Consolação in the heart of Coura, with tradition, faith, entertainment, community gatherings and Minho food. The council lists no detailed programme.

Canas de Senhorim, Nelas
Three days of a medieval fair at Canas de Senhorim, with merchants, troubadours, warriors and craftspeople, dancing around the fire, tests of bravery and food. No venue or detailed programme has been published.

Troviscal, Oliveira do Bairro
The Parque do Troviscal holds its first Celtic and medieval fair over three days, with merchants, craftspeople working traditional trades, food, music and historical re-enactment. Run by the Casa do Povo do Troviscal with CENA. The detailed programme is not out yet.

Mogadouro, Bragança
Four days of the Feira de Atividades Económicas e Turísticas do Nordeste Transmontano, with local companies, regional produce, food, handicrafts, culture and entertainment.

Monte Gordo, Vila Real de Santo António
A week for the patron saint of Monte Gordo, with entertainment, music, tradition and faith. Put on by the Câmara Municipal de Vila Real de Santo António with the junta de freguesia, the parish church, local sports clubs and the artisanal fishing and shellfish associations.
14 to 16 September
Castelejo, Fundão
Three days of festivities for Santa Luzia and Santa Eufémia at Castelejo, in the Cova da Beira, described locally as the largest religious gathering in the area. A candlelit procession at ten on the night of the 14th, and solemn mass at eleven on the 15th, the Fundão municipal holiday, followed by a procession with the image of the patron saint.

Sousel, Portalegre
A small Alto Alentejo town's Feira de São Miguel: the traditional market opens at eight on the Saturday morning, a horse ride leaves at nine, and there is folk dancing, food stalls, a garraiada with young bulls on the Saturday, and live music each night. No prices are published.

Alfena, Valongo
Valongo was once the town that made Portugal's wooden toys, and the Festa do Brinquedo in the Parque Vale do Leça keeps that alive with craftsmen making them in front of you, workshops, street entertainment, food stalls and evening concerts. From six on the Friday, from two on the Saturday and Sunday.

Querença, Loulé
The second Festival de Marionetas at Querença brings three days of puppet theatre to a hill village above Loulé: shows, workshops and an exhibition at the village foundation. The draw for a language learner is Teatro Dom Roberto, the traditional Portuguese glove-puppet show, played here by Adriana Pereira, the only woman working the form in the Algarve.
26 and 27 September
Pendilhe, Vila Nova de Paiva
The tenth Feira do Mel e Artesanato in a Beira Alta village opens on the Saturday with a bombo drum parade and the sixth Encontro de Bombos, and continues with local honey and crafts, a photography competition, an ethnographic procession and a folklore festival on the Sunday.

Vieira do Minho, Braga
Nothing to do with the Lisbon flea market of the same name. This is the council's festa maior, one of the big romarias of the Baixo Minho, four days of street fair, traditional stalls and nightly concerts. The council presented the programme on 11 September.

Alcácer do Sal, Setúbal
The Feira Nova de Outubro in the Parque Urbano 25 de Abril has more than two centuries behind it: stalls of regional produce and dried fruit, an exhibition on the fair's own history, and concerts every night. Be aware that the Sunday afternoon at five is a corrida de touros, a bullfight, before the music at half past ten.

Vila Nova da Baronia, Alvito
Free
Festival Vai Descalço, first edition, in a small Baixo Alentejo parish: concerts, theatre, craft workshops, talks, food stalls and a market of handicrafts, jewellery, sweets and pottery, all in the jardim público. Free entry.

Mêda, Guarda
The Feira das Vindimas is one of the four fairs the council of Mêda holds each year, on a Monday, which is also the town's weekly market day. The council publishes the date and nothing more, so expect a producers' market with wine and local goods rather than a programme.

Registration for the 17 October sitting opened on 7 September at 15:00 Lisbon time and is open now. The 7 November sitting opens for registration on 14 September at 15:00. Registration for the 19 September sitting has closed. The higher-level exams fall in the first week of November, DIPLE on 3 November, DEPLE and DUPLE on 4 November and DAPLE on 5 November, with registration closing 20 October. Earlier 2026 CIPLE sittings had already gone esgotado, full.

Only drivers with a foreign licence
Once resident in Portugal, a foreign driving licence must be exchanged for a Portuguese one within two years of establishing residency.

The government's simplified IUC payment regime, a single or split payment depending on the amount owed, takes effect from 2027, not 2026. The reform reorganises payment dates only and does not raise the tax itself.

Legal-residence periods for naturalisation rise to 7 years for Portuguese-speaking-country and EU nationals, and 10 years for others. Automatic nationality for children born in Portugal to resident foreign parents now requires parental will plus 5 years' prior residence. The special regime for descendants of Sephardic Jews has ended. Procedures formally pending on 19 May 2026 continue under the previous version of the law.

The law required government to update the Nationality Regulation within 90 days of publication, a deadline of 16 August 2026. As of this update no such regulation has appeared on Diário da República, so the practical mechanics of the new knowledge requirement remain unclear.

A reduced senior ticket is offered, though the exact rate varies by source, so it is worth confirming at the door. Free entry on Sunday afternoons.

Shut since November 2025 for PRR-funded works, with reopening only loosely pencilled in for the second half of 2026. The standard senior concession across Portugal's national museum network is 50 percent off, with free entry for residents on Sundays and holidays until 14:00, though this museum's own rate is unconfirmed while it is closed.

The Baixo Alentejo sacred music festival, running since 2003, puts the Mario Nandayapa Quartet in the Forte de São Clemente at half past nine. The festival moves around the Alentejo all year, choosing churches and historic buildings for their acoustics, and every concert is free and open to anyone.

Porto
A tribute concert marking 90 years since the birth of poet-lyricist Ary dos Santos, with fado singer Camané among the performers alongside pop and rock names. Only Camané's segments will be slow and clear; the rest of the programme moves faster. Tickets roughly 11 to 32 euros.

Porto
António Pinho Vargas's opera, to a libretto by the poet Manuel Gusmão, first staged at São Carlos in 1998 and built out of voices, fragments of speech and quotation rather than characters. It is about the revolution and what came after it, including 25 November. This is a concert version, brought north by the national opera house. Sung in Portuguese and hard going, so come for what it is about rather than for listening practice.

A song-opera made with the conductor Aldo Brizzi from the Sanskrit poem Gita Govinda, performed with the Núcleo de Ópera da Bahia, choir and orchestra. The venue says it is his only Portuguese date and one of very few anywhere in Europe this year. Brazilian Portuguese rather than European, so take it as a night out and not as practice. Tickets 60 to 120 euros.

The Évora international organ festival comes to Lisbon for the first time in its history, opening its new season at five in the afternoon with the young Spanish organist Nadal Roig Serralta, who won the festival’s first organ competition last year. Free entry, and an hour long.

A male choir with Coimbra and classical guitars, working through fado from Coimbra and Lisbon, Amália and José Afonso, and songs from Cape Verde, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique and Timor. Choral singing is slower and far more clearly enunciated than a solo fadista, which makes this one of the easiest concerts of the autumn to follow. Five in the afternoon, an hour and a half, in the small Coliseu Club room.

The fado singer's debut as sole lyricist and composer, blending fado with flamenco, Arabic music and jazz, featuring Ana Moura and Agir. The core fado tracks are slow and repetitive, which makes them good for learners; the flamenco and jazz-inflected tracks move faster. European Portuguese, Lisbon fadista.

Lisbon and Porto
The 1980s new-wave band reunites for three shows. Both Lisbon nights at the Coliseu dos Recreios are sold out, and the Porto date is down to its last tickets. Fast, dense rock, so not a learner pick, included as a notable cultural event.

Entroncamento
The Museu Nacional Ferroviario puts a fifty-minute chamber concert into its halls on Saturday afternoons at half past three, through to November, for the 170th anniversary of the railway in Portugal. There is no extra charge: the concerts are covered by the ordinary museum ticket.

Cultura nas Freguesias takes free shows around the parishes of the Portalegre council all summer, and finishes at Alagoa with the Banda da Sociedade Musical Nisense playing in the Largo do Rossio.

The Associacao Regional de Musica Tradicional do Alentejo play the Jardim Municipal at four in the afternoon. Sung and played Alentejo repertoire, in the town that carries cante.

Souropires, Pinhel
Pinhel runs its Festival Patrimonio through the parishes into November, and this night lands in the Igreja Matriz at Souropires at half past nine. Fado sung in a village church, which is a different thing from a fado house.

Póvoa de Varzim
Cantar a Povoa marks ninety years of the Rancho Poveiro, with the group and the town philharmonic band together at a quarter to ten in the evening.

Barcelos
Free
The fifth concert of the Barcelos Fest Ensemble season brings the cellist Varoujan Bartikian and the pianist Bernardo Santos into the parish church. All six concerts in the series are free.

The Banda Musical de Belinho and the Banda Musical de Oliveira play together at three in the afternoon at the Campo 5 de Outubro, closing the Ciclo de Bandas Cândido Bastos.

Cabrela, Montemor-o-Novo
Coletivo GIRA, founded in Lisbon by immigrant women, brings one of the best known forms of Afro-Brazilian culture to the Cabeço da Igreja Velha at six in the evening. Part of the Alentejo Heritage Festival, which runs from the 25th to the 27th.

The Orquestra da Costa Atlântica opens its 2026 to 2027 season with chamber music for woodwind trio at five on the Sunday afternoon in the auditorium of the municipal library: Schulhoff, Lutosławski, Claude Arrieu and the Portuguese composer Fernando Lopes-Graça, under the title Vozes Silenciadas, Memórias Reencontradas. Instrumental from start to finish, so nothing to follow and everything to hear. Part of the Guitarra d'Alma weekend; the Sunday morning show at ten is for children.

João Leote sings fado in the Ermida de São Sebastião at six in the evening, organised by the Academia de Música de Tavira with the council's support. The 42nd Encontro de Corais Alentejanos gathers eight cante alentejano groups, most of them from pensioners' and workers' associations, at the Sociedade Musical 5 de Outubro at three in the afternoon. Cante is sung slowly, in unison and without instruments, and is the easiest Portuguese singing there is to follow. Free entry.

Irene Lima, Catherine Strynckx, Bárbara Duarte and Nuno Abreu play as Cello 4x4 in the Igreja da Misericórdia, now the Templo da Música, at seven on the Thursday evening, an hour of nineteenth-century Portuguese repertoire by Freitas Gazul and Arved Poorten that almost nobody performs. Nothing is at market yet, and the two councils that make the most of the crop have both booked the last full weekend of October. Vinhais holds its 21st Rural Castanea in Trás-os-Montes, and Arouca runs its Festival da Castanha on the Avenida 25 de Abril with roasting, traditional dancing and regional stalls. Worth putting in a diary now if a magusto is the plan.

Soza, Vagos
The fourteenth Feira da Abobora at the Largo de Sao Miguel: pumpkins sold whole and cooked every way the parish knows, sweet and savoury, with a pumpkin-porridge contest.
28 to 30 November
Aljezur
Free
The Lyra sweet potato that carries the Aljezur name, eaten through everything from convent sweets to savoury dishes. Entry and parking are both free, which the festival says plainly.

Vila Nova de Poiares, Coimbra
Free
The Confraria da Chanfana and the council aim to cook record quantities of chanfana in the certified black clay pots of Olho Marinho, handed out free on the Alameda de Santo André between noon and six, with traditional pastries and wine tastings alongside.

Penalva do Castelo, Viseu
The thirtieth fair for the Bravo de Esmolfe apple, the variety native to Esmolfe parish, runs from eight in the morning to nine at night at the Centro de Exposições de Produtos DOC, with products and crafts on sale.
18 to 22 November
Alcaide, Fundão
The village mushroom festival runs tasquinhas serving mushroom dishes, mycological walks in the Serra da Gardunha, workshops, talks, cooking shows and a Mercado da Terra. The 2026 programme is not published yet.
25 to 27 September
Vila Nova de Tazem, Gouveia
The seventh fair for alambicada, the village dish of lamb and white wine cooked slowly in an iron pot over a wood fire. Tasting is by advance booking on 965 546 625, with a comparative blind wine tasting on the Sunday and a second tasting on the Saturday.
17 to 20 September
Covilhã, Castelo Branco
The cherovia is a sweet white root close to a parsnip that had almost vanished from Portuguese kitchens. The nineteenth festival puts it back on the table at street tasquinhas in the old town, fried, in soups and stews and in puddings, with tastings, show cooking and a cherovia cooking contest.

The 39th Feira Nacional dos Frutos Secos fills the old town with growers' stalls built around the figo preto de Torres Novas, the town's dried black fig, alongside almonds, walnuts and raisins and the cakes, jams and liqueurs made from them, with a dried-fig pastry competition. The council says entry is free.

Alvaiázere, Leiria
The chícharo is the grass pea, a poor man's pulse that this small town has made its own. The 22nd Festival Gastronómico runs tasquinhas kept by local associations, a market of local produce, crafts and bric-a-brac, street entertainment, concerts and guided walks.

The 23rd Feira do Porco e do Enchido: association-run tavernas serve arroz da sua, torresmos na caçoila and pork roasted on the spit, and local producers sell hand-made chouriças, farinheiras, alheiras, cured hams and morcelas. The village of Meruge gets thousands of visitors for it.

Alcobaça
The 28th Mostra Internacional de Doces e Licores Conventuais fills the monastery with more than thirty makers from across Portugal and abroad, selling the egg-and-sugar recipes the Cistercian nuns and monks left behind, with the liqueurs to match. Porto to Pinhão
CP's one-day excursion from Porto-Campanhã to Pinhão, with hands-on grape picking and a quinta lunch, offered on two Saturdays only. Departs Porto-Campanhã at 08:01 and returns from Régua, back in Porto at 21:05. Adults 86 euros in second class and 93 in first, children aged 4 to 12 pay 46 and 52.
deixar de
To stop doing, to no longer. Two small words that turn any verb into an ending or a ban.
Every English speaker knows deixar as leave or let, so deixam de poder reads as nonsense until you learn that deixar de plus a verb means to stop, to cease, to no longer. It is how notices end things: "o cartão deixa de ser válido", the card is no longer valid; "a linha deixou de funcionar", the line stopped working. The flip side is a trap worth knowing: "não deixe de visitar" means be sure to visit, do not miss it, and has nothing to do with leaving. And the same report says "a proibição abrange a maioria dos veículos pesados", last week’s word doing its job: the ban covers most heavy vehicles.
