The Subjunctive mood

The subjunctive mood has three simple verb tenses:

  • O presente do conjuntivo (present subjunctive)
    • ✏️ Espero que ele estude para o exame. (I hope he studies for the exam.)
  • O pretérito imperfeito do conjuntivo (imperfect past subjunctive)
    • 🎓 Se ele estudasse mais, tiraria boas notas. (If he studied more, he would get good grades.)
  • O futuro do conjuntivo (future subjunctive)
    • 😌 Se ele estudar para o exame, vai sentir-se mais preparado. (If he studies for the exam, he will feel more prepared.)

It also has three compound tenses:

  • O pretérito perfeito composto do conjuntivo (present perfect subjunctive)
    • 🌙 É possível que ele tenha estudado durante a noite. (It’s possible that he has studied during the night.)
  • O pretérito mais-que-perfeito composto do conjuntivo (pluperfect subjunctive)
    • 📝 Se ele tivesse estudado mais, teria passado no exame. (If he had studied more, he would have passed the exam.)
  • O futuro composto do conjuntivo (future perfect subjunctive).
    • ☕ Quando ele tiver estudado tudo, poderá descansar. (When he has studied everything, he will be able to rest.)
