Exploring the Solar System

This lesson is based on a fun and educational video from the European Space Agency (ESA), where Paxi, a friendly alien, takes us on a journey through the solar system.

Olá, eu sou o Paxi e venho de um planeta muito distante.(Hello, I am Paxi, and I come from a very distant planet.)

Vim à Terra para te conhecer e contar-te as minhas aventuras no espaço.(I came to Earth to meet you and tell you my adventures in space.)

Estás preparado para explorar o teu sistema solar?(Are you ready to explore your solar system?)

Oh, eu adoro olhar para as estrelas e muitos de vocês também gostam de o fazer.(Oh, I love looking at the stars, and many of you like to do it too.)

Mas não seria melhor olhar para estes objetos do espaço?(But wouldn’t it be better to look at these objects from space?)

Vamos lá, vamos começar.(Let’s go, let’s begin.)

Este é o teu planeta, a Terra.(This is your planet, Earth.)

Consegues ver que metade dele é brilhante e a outra metade é escura?(Can you see that half of it is bright and the other half is dark?)

A Terra está a rodar.(The Earth is rotating.)

A metade da Terra que está virada para o Sol está iluminada, por isso é de dia.(The half of the Earth facing the Sun is lit, so it’s daytime.)

Enquanto o outro lado, que não está virado para o Sol, está escuro, e é por isso que é de noite.(Whereas the other side, that is not facing the Sun, is dark, and that’s why it’s night.)

A Terra demora vinte e quatro horas a dar uma volta completa sobre si mesma.(The Earth takes 24 hours to do a complete rotation on itself.)

Um dia inteiro.(A whole day.)

Olha, ali está a Lua a andar à volta da Terra, ou como se diz, a orbitar a Terra.(Look, there is the Moon going around the Earth, or as they say, orbiting the Earth.)

Sabias que a Terra orbita à volta do Sol enquanto gira sobre si mesma?(Did you know that the Earth orbits the Sun while it spins on its axis?)

A Terra e a Lua estão sempre juntas.(The Earth and the Moon are always together.)

A Terra demora um ano a dar uma volta completa.(The Earth takes one year to make a complete rotation.)

Vamos primeiro aproximar-nos do Sol, mas não muito próximo, eu não quero queimar as minhas antenas outra vez! Uff…(Let’s first get closer to the Sun, but not too close—I don’t want to burn my antennas again! Phew…)

O Sol é a nossa estrela.(The Sun is our star.)

É muito quente e dá-nos luz e calor.(It’s very hot, and it gives us light and heat.)

A Terra não está sozinha, é apenas um dos oito planetas que orbitam em torno do Sol.(The Earth is not alone, it’s just one of the eight planets that orbit the Sun.)

Vamos conhecê-los!(Let’s get to know them!)

Os quatro planetas rochosos próximos do Sol são Mercúrio, Vénus, Terra e Marte.(The four rocky planets closest to the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.)

Mercúrio está muito próximo do Sol e é o planeta mais pequeno do sistema solar.(Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun and it’s the smallest planet in the solar system.)

Vénus é muito quente, tem uma atmosfera espessa e densa que é venenosa para os humanos.(Venus is very hot, it has a thick and dense atmosphere that is poisonous for humans.)

É melhor manter o meu capacete bem apertado! Este ar também é venenoso para mim.(It’s best to keep my helmet tight! This air is also poisonous for me.)

Já vimos a Terra, o teu planeta. É muito especial, sabias?(We’ve already seen Earth, your planet. Did you know it’s very special?)

É o único planeta no sistema solar coberto com água em estado líquido: rios, lagos e oceanos.(It’s the only planet in the solar system covered with liquid water: rivers, lakes, and oceans.)

E é o único com vida, tal como a conhecemos.(And it’s the only one with life as we know it.)

Marte está coberto de pó de ferrugem, por isso tem uma cor alaranjada.(Mars is covered with rust dust, so it has an orange colour.)

É por isso que as pessoas lhe chamam o Planeta Vermelho.(That’s why people call it the Red Planet.)

Talvez também tenha havido aqui água líquida há muito tempo atrás.(Maybe there was liquid water here a long time ago.)

Olha ali, depois de Marte existem muitos pedaços de rocha mais pequenos.(Look there, after Mars there are many smaller pieces of rock.)

Estes são chamados asteroides e existem milhões deles.(These are called asteroids, and there are millions of them.)

Formam a cintura de asteroides e também orbitam o Sol.(They form the Asteroid Belt and also orbit the Sun.)

Já percebi, é um cometa!(I understand now, it’s a comet!)

É composto por rocha e gelo, é parecido com os asteroides que vimos anteriormente.(It is made up of rock and ice, it’s similar to the asteroids we saw earlier.)

Mas deixa-me dizer-te que são muito diferentes. Este está a aproximar-se do Sol!(But let me tell you they are very different. This one is approaching the Sun!)
