Animals
When learning animal names in Portuguese, you'll discover that each noun has a gender assignment. Typically, each animal is associated with one gender, and sometimes the other gender may have a different final letter (o gato [male cat] / a gata [female cat]) or even an entirely distinct word (a vaca [cow] / o boi [bull]).
Many animals, especially wild animals, are generally referred to in one gender only, independent of the actual gender of the individual animal (a abelha [the bee]).
