Verbs and Their Prepositions
When using verbs in Portuguese, it's important to note that they are often followed by specific prepositions, which may not have direct translations in other languages.
- 🩺 Ela preocupa-se com a sua saúde. (She worries about her health.)
- 🤦 Eu esqueci-me de marcar a consulta. (I forgot to book the appointment.)
There are no grammatical rules to help you know which preposition is used with which verb and many verbs can be combined with different prepositions, so it's a good idea to try to learn them together. Additionally, certain prepositions combine with definite articles, determiners or pronouns, such as ‘por’ + ‘o’ = ‘pelo’ (by the), ‘a’ + ‘o’ = ‘ao’ (to the), and ‘em’ + ‘ele’ = ‘nele’ (in him).
