Adjectives
Adjectives are words that describe nouns by attributing qualities or characteristics to them.Here are some key rules for using adjectives in European Portuguese:
- Adjectives generally come after the noun they describe.
- 🏛️ A casa branca. (The white house.)
- Adjectives can sometimes be placed before the noun to give emphasis or change the meaning, adding subjectivity.
- 📏 Ele é um homem grande. (He is a big/large man.)
- 👏 Ele é um grande homem. (He is a great man.)
- 🧠 É uma pergunta simples. (It is a simple/easy question.)
- 🤔 É uma simples pergunta. (It is a mere question.)
- Adjectives must match the gender of the noun. Masculine nouns use the masculine adjective ending, while feminine nouns use the feminine ending.
- 🐾 O gato preto (The black cat - masculine)
- 🐾 A gata preta (The black cat - feminine)
- 👻 Um filme assustador (A scary movie)
- 😨 Uma história assustadora (A scary story)
