This is a feminine noun used to refer to both boys and girls in the period of infancy.
- 🧒 O Pedro é uma criança esperta. (Pedro is a smart child.)
- 🧒 A Maria é uma criança esperta. (Mary is a smart child.)
Since this is a quote, we left the masculine pronouns in the original English text, however, in the Portuguese text all the pronouns are feminine because “criança” is a feminine word.
