“Quantos” is the masculine plural form of the question word “How many” with the feminine “quantas.” We use it before nouns that are plural. For example:
- “Quantos quilos queres?” (How many kilos do you want?);
- “Quantas irmãs tens?” (How many sisters do you have?);
The singular form means “how much?” and can also be masculine (quanto) or feminine (quanta). These words are used for uncountable nouns. For instance, while we can count kilos or grams, we cannot count rice or butter, so we say:
- “Quanto arroz queres?” (How much rice do you want?);
- “Quanta manteiga ponho?” (How much butter do I put?);
