Love and Other Feelings

The word amor means love. While in English the verb to love is frequently used to express other feelings than deep love, when the Portuguese use the verb amar they really mean it!

• Eu amo-te muito. (I love you very much!)

Here are other words and phrases that express love and affection:

• Paixão (Passion)
  • 💼 Ela tem uma paixão enorme pelo seu trabalho. (She has a huge passion for her work.)
• Apaixonar-se (To fall in love)We use the verb apaixonar-se when referring to falling in love. The preposition used to say who the person falls in love with is the preposition por.
  • Eu não quero apaixonar-me por ele. (I don't want to fall in love with him.)
• Apaixonado (in love)When the person is in love we say he or she está apaixonado(a).
  • 💼 Eu acho que ela está apaixonada pelo colega de trabalho. (I think she’s in love with her work colleague.)
• Gostar (To like)Usually, people find it easier to say that they like the other person very much rather than that they love them.
  • Gosto muito de ti. (I like you very much.)
• Adorar (To adore)When we want to say that we really like something, we use the verb adorar (to adore).
  • Eu adoro chocolate! (I love chocolate!)
