Estar com | Ter + noun

In Portuguese it is common to use the construction ‘estar com’ + noun (to be with + noun) or ‘ter’ + noun’ (to have + noun), to say what we are feeling or what our state is.

• 🏡 Hoje estou com preguiça de sair de casa. (I am feeling lazy about leaving the house today.)

This construction is very common, and in many cases, the adjective is rarely used.

We may express not being in that state or feeling with ‘estar sem’ (to be without).

Here are the most common nouns used in combination with ‘estar com/sem’ or ‘ter,’ to express a state or feeling:

Preguiça (Laziness)

• 🍳 Nós temos preguiça de cozinhar todos os dias. (We are too lazy to cook every day.)

Fome (Hunger)

• 🤤 Ela está com muita fome. (She is very hungry.)

Sono (Sleepiness)

• 😴 Estou com tanto sono. (I am so sleepy.)

Sede (Thirst)

• 🥤 Você tem sede? (Are you thirsty?)

Medo (Fear)

• ✈️ Nós estamos com medo de perder o voo. (We are afraid of missing the flight.)
• 🕷️ Ela não tem medo de aranhas. (She isn’t afraid of spiders.)

Pressa (Hurry)

• 🏃♀️ Ela tem pressa de chegar a casa. (She is in a hurry to get home.)

Ciúmes (Jealousy)

• 😒 Ela está com ciúmes do irmão. (She is jealous of her brother.)

Calor / frio (Heat / cold)

• ❄️ Vê-se que ela está com frio. (One can see that she is cold.)
• 🌡️ Você não tem calor com esse casaco? (Aren't you hot in that coat?)

Paciência (Patience)

• ⏳ Hoje, estou sem paciência para esperar. (Today, I have no patience to wait.)
• 👶 Ela tem muita paciência. (She is very patient.)

Raiva (Rage, anger)

• 😠 Eles estão com raiva por não terem sido informados a tempo. (They are angry for not being informed in time.)

Esperança (Hope)

• 🙏 Ele tem esperança de encontrar um bom emprego. (He is hopeful about finding a good job.)

Vergonha (Shame, embarrassment)

• 😥 Ela está com vergonha da família. (She is ashamed of her family.)
• 🎤 Eles têm vergonha de falar em público. (They are embarrassed to speak in public.)

Saudades (Longing)

• 👪 Estou com saudades da minha família. (I miss my family.)

Vontade (Will, desire)

Razão (Reason)
